THE RUSSIAN STATE LIBRARY is one of the largest libraries in the world.

Collections of the Library are unique in terms of completeness and universality and include documents in 247 languages of the world. At present the total size of the Library’s collections exceeds 42 million items.

The Russian State Library has specialised collections of maps, musical scores and records, rare books, printed art, dissertations, newspapers, etc.

There is no field of science or practice, which would not be reflected in the sources stored here. The Library is indeed THE MEMORY OF RUSSIA.

THE RUSSIAN STATE LIBRARY provides access to its rich book collections for the development of science, culture, and education through a system of catalogues and by organising various exhibitions.

RSL prepares union catalogues of Russian books, and publishes research and reference bibliographies.

Russian Literary Heritage on-line

Andrew W. Mellon
Andrew W. Mellon
Russian Literary Heritage on-line is a project funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation based in New York and managed by the British Council, Moscow.

The project is the first attempt in the Russian Federation of a collaboration between a library and a literary estate. Its overall goal is to develop and implement an on-line joint catalogue offering integrated access to all the bibliographic records and a selection of digital resources of the Moscow Russian State Library, related to the Russian author Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy, and to the bibliographic catalogues of the Personal Library of Tolstoy and of other related collections, held by the Tolstoy Literary Estate, in Yasnaya Polyana.
